Bus Transportation Fee

The state government funds public school transportation for students who live 2.5 miles or more from school and live within the district. School districts are then given the local option to determine whether to provide transportation for those students who live less than 2.5 miles from their school. USD 348 has chosen to offer transportation to those students who live less than 2.5 miles from school. In order to offset the cost of transporting those students the district charges a bus transportation fee. For the 2016-17 school year that fee is $125 per student, per year. This fee also applies to any out of district students who meet the bus in our district or PEP peer students as we receive no transportation funding for those students. The fee must be paid before the student rides the bus the first time. The USD 348 transportation department will determine the distance a student lives from their school. If there is a question on the distance a student lives from their school the state auditor has the final decision if the mileage is under or over the 2.5 miles. The fee is determined based on the student’s home residence and that residence’s distance from the student’s school. The fee is not prorated for part time riders.

Students that qualify for free or reduced lunches are not charged a transportation fee as long as the parents/guardians sign a Consent for Release form.  Students who have transportation written into their IEP as needed for their disability also are not charged a transportation fee.
